Kindergarten Snowflakes

Kindergarteners have been learning about Wilson Bentley, a photographer and scientist from Vermont. He was the first person to photograph snowflakes using a very special camera with a microscope. Wilson Bentley took photographs that even today revel two important truths about snowflakes: first that no two are alike , and second, that each one is startling beautiful.

Kindergarteners created four snowflakes each using white oil pastels for the lines and black paper for the background. We were aiming for the same black/white photographic look when Wilson Bentley was photographing his snowflakes! Kindergarteners were excited to learn about different kinds of cameras, who a photographer was, symmetry and neutral colors!

Fourth Grade Printmakers

Fourth Graders learned the technique of creating multiple prints. They were inspired by Andy Warhol's use of repetition. Each student created 4 editions of their self-portrait and used complementary color schemes to enhance their artwork.

Inside the Kiln

This is a photo of the inside of the kiln. The kiln is used to fire clay artwork. These are clay islands created by the second grade waiting to be taken out of the kiln. More photos of the islands to come!

Third Grade Monochromatic Self-Portait Collage

Ms. Krass totally forgot the post these wonderful monochromatic self-portaits done by third grade! Third graders used a monochromatic color scheme and values of that one color! All self-portraits are hanging in the hallway....when you have a chance, stop by and view the wonderful artwork!

Kindergarten Clay Jewelry

Kindergarten just completed their clay bead and medallion necklaces! The kindergartners learned all about clay, texture and pattern! They were so excited to wear their necklaces during the school day and show everyone!

Second graders have been learning about directional lines, warm/cool colors, pentagons, triangles and hexagons! Can you find vertical lines, diagonal lines and horizontal lines in their spider webs? Each student got to choose between a triangle, pentagon and hexagon shape for their web, and paint either warm or cool colors. We read many books about spiders to help us with creating our own. There are many more spiders hanging up in the lobby at school!

Take a Walk with a LINE!

Kindergartners have been learning about lines! Lines are everywhere! There many kinds of lines, wavy, straight, broken, dotted, blocked, zig zag, vertical, horizontal, scalloped and sprial. See if you can find all these lines in your everyday world.

First Grade Kandinsky Inspirations

The first graders have just completed their Kandinsky inspired paintings.

Students listened to jazz music taking note of fast/slow tempo to paint their lines. The following week, student reviewed color mixing and mixed primary colors to create secondary

colors within their paintings. Many of these

wonderful paintings are already hanging on the walls in our school.

SKETCHBOOK MADNESS

Sketchbook Madness is happening this week in the art room! All students are creating personal sketchbooks that will be kept in the art room all year long. Students will be able to work in their sketchbooks throughout the year. Many artists keep sketchbooks in which they experiment ideas and collect drawings of their environment. Sketchbooks are like diaries for artists!

The most famous sketchbooks are those of Leonardo da Vinci. Pablo Picasso produced 178 sketchbooks in his lifetime. Wow, that is a lot of sketchbooks! Will you create that many in your lifetime?

Classroom Sketchbook Rules:

1. Take your time on your drawings

2. Be original. Do not copy.

3. Do not waste paper.

4. Crayons and colored pencils only.

Radial Designs using Recycled Plastic Tops

Fourth Grade just finished their radial designs

using a very interesting

art material, plastic bottle tops! Our school has been recycling plastic

bottle tops all year long. We organized them all according to their colors!

What a wonderful way to incorporate recycling and art!

Who Loves Cupcakes?

Kindergarten just finished creating these yummy cupcakes that look so good you want to eat them! Ms. Krass is keeping these over the summer and will hang them in the lobby in August when you come back to school!

Fourth Grade Papermaking Workshop

Katy DeMent, a local papermaking artist came to teach our 4th grade students the history of papermaking and how to create their own piece of handmade paper! All students were able to feel the paper pulp on their hands and collage interesting, unique images on their paper! The students had a blast and learned many new vocabulary words to use when creating paper again! Thanks Katy the Paper Lady!
