Fifth grade students just completed creating their self portraits from clay. Students rolled out a sphere of clay to create a slab. Students added details to their self portriat using coils. Their self portrait was fired in the kiln after it dried completely. Students were able to glaze their self portraits many unique colors to reflect themselves! Be on the look out, students are taking them home this week.

Kindergartners were inspired to create African Kufi Hats after reading The Hatseller and the Monkeys, a West African folktale retold and written by Baba Wague Diakite. The book is about a hat peddler, whose colorful hats are ransacked by monkeys while taking a nap. The hat peddler has to do many things to get his hats back from the monkeys and learns an important lesson while doing so! My students loved this book, and believed that there were monkeys on our school roof waiting to get their colorful Kufi hats!
