Do you Gyotaku? My FIRST graders do!

Gyotaku (Japanese 魚拓, from gyo "fish" + taku "rubbing") is the traditional method of Japanese fish printing, dating from the mid-1800s. This form of nature printing may have been used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an artform on its own.

First graders are learning the art of GYOTAKU!  Check back again for their completed fish prints surrounded with warm/cool colors!

Kevin Cole, Georgia artist, inspired Paper Sculptures

First graders were introduced to Georgia artist, Kevin Cole and his art work, inspired by ties. My first graders were so excited about the ties, that I had enough donated so that each student could "WEAR" a tie in the art room while they were creating their "tie" like paper sculptures! The paper sculptures are amazing and hanging all over our building!

First Grade Warm/Cool Fish Prints

First graders found out all about Japanese fish printing, "Gyotaku"......but we didn't use real fish! Long ago Japanese fishermen would paint a fish that they had caught with black ink and press a piece of newspaper on top of it to create a print, this process was used to record to size of their catch! We also learned all about warm and cool color schemes, fish habitats and even used found objects (corks) to print along the bottom of our artwork to create coral. What wonderful art learning was had by all!

First Grade Kandinsky Inspirations

The first graders have just completed their Kandinsky inspired paintings.
Students listened to jazz music taking note of fast/slow tempo to paint their lines. The following week, student reviewed color mixing and mixed primary colors to create secondary
colors within their paintings. Many of these
wonderful paintings are already hanging on the walls in our school.

First grade has been working with clay to create beads formed like spheres and cubes! They have been working so hard. Their beads will be fired in the kiln for the following week and stained with paint. First graders also created a circular slab for the main focus of their necklace. Students were able to use different objects to create patterns and textures in their clay. Students will then string their clay spheres and cubes in a pattern on a colored wire along with cylinder shaped straws for spacing.

SNAILS, SNAILS and more SNAILS!

First graders have been waiting the arrival of snails in the art room! Students have been learning all about snails, their habitat and what makes these little creatures so special, those COOL spiral lines found on their shells! To be able to draw snails, students were able to view actual snails at their tables while working! It was a snail FRENZY! First graders were excited and able to put real life within their drawings using patterns, shape and line!
