Youth Art Month

Youth Art Month (YAM) is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art and art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. The purposes of YAM are:

• To direct attention to the value of art education which develops divergent and critical thinking; multi-cultural awareness; and technical, communication and expressive skills.
• To increase community, business and governmental support for art education. 
• To recognize art as a necessity for the full development of better quality life for all people.
• To expand art programs in schools and stimulate new ones.
• To increase community understanding and interest in art and art education through involvement in art exhibits, workshops and other creative ventures.
• To provide additional opportunities for individuals of all ages to participate in creative art learning.
• To encourage commitment to the arts by students, community organizations and individuals everywhere.
• To recognize art education as a viable component of the total education curriculum that develops citizens of a global society.

Do you Gyotaku? My FIRST graders do!

Gyotaku (Japanese 魚拓, from gyo "fish" + taku "rubbing") is the traditional method of Japanese fish printing, dating from the mid-1800s. This form of nature printing may have been used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an artform on its own.

First graders are learning the art of GYOTAKU!  Check back again for their completed fish prints surrounded with warm/cool colors!

Fourth Graders will be visiting the High Museum on Friday

I am preparing my fourth graders this week on museum manners and etiquette while attending the Atlanta High Museum of Art!  Students will be going to see the "Go West" exhibition that is currently on display until April 13, 2014.  They are so excited and for many this is their for FIRST time to visit an art museum!

Laurel Burch inspired Symmetrical CATS- MEow

First Graders loved learning about symmetry and were inspired by artist, Laurel Burch while creating their  unique cats.  Students worked with many geometric shapes and patterns!  As you can see, they even

named their CATS!
